Still Want More Relief Help?
So, I've noticed a lot of buzz about the Mets still interested in some relief pitchers. Possible trade options are guys like David Weathers and David Riske, while a possible free agent pickup could be someone like Al Reyes.
In 54 innings for the Reds this season, the 38 year old Weathers has a 3.38 ERA, during this time hitters are hitting .277 against him. Weathers is a free agent after the 2008 season.
Brewers relief pitcher David Riske, has a 3.91 ERA in 38.2 innings, and hitters are hitting .252 against him. It should be noted that Riske is owed over $10 million through 2010.
Free agent pitcher Al Reyes, who was released by the Rays earlier this month, had a 4.37 ERA in 22.2 innings. Reyes, who has closer experience, turned 38 years old earlier this season.
So, basically, these are the best available options. None of these guys are the fire ballers that miss bats, they're pretty much exactly what we have already. But, some people might find these guys to be a better fit than some of the pitchers already in the bullpen. So, please, answer the following poll;
Now, another topic that needs to be brought up for those of you who selected options 1-to-3. If you're going to pickup another relief pitcher for the playoff push, which current Mets relief pitcher are you going to let go, or possibly trade?
The assumption always used against the current crop of relief pitchers for the Mets is that they're too many specialist. That would include Feliciano, Show and Smith, while guys like Aaron Heilman, expected to get both lefties and righties out, have also pitched like specialist this year. While I'm bashing everybody in the pen, it should be noted that Duaner Sanchez has struggled to hit 90 MPH for the past two months, and Luis Ayala was basically the Nationals version of Aaron Heilman.
Making my case for each pitcher, I'd basically say that Feliciano/Show OWN the Phillies and that's something that will help the Mets down the stretch.. Aaron Heilman still has the stuff and still, at times, shows flashes of being that dominant relief pitcher that he has been in the past.. It's always important to have somebody come from a different arm angle and that's where Joe Smith comes in. Pitch him against just right handers and he should be fine... The Mets feel like a higher arm angle could do wonders for Luis Ayala.. And Dirty, well, even without his good stuff he has still been an adequate relief pitcher this season.

The option not listed is to place Sanchez on the DL due to arm fatigue and bring in Reyes. That would keep Sanchez available for the playoffs and give Reyes a chance to demonstrate he deserves a playoff spot. Then Sanchez can come back after the rosters expand.
