Phillies acquire Joe Blanton

According to Gary Cohen on the Mets broadcast, the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired RHP Joe Blanton from the Ahtletics. More, including a link, in a little while...

UPDATE (7:20 PM): ESPN has the scoop as well- three good prospects, including top prospect 2B Adrien Cardenas, have been sent to Oakland. Looks to me as if Philly overpaid for an overweight pitcher who doesn't strike anyone out, and has a 4.96 ERA in a pitcher's park this year. I could see him struggling moving to CBP. At least he will eat innings, which he's done his whole career thus far. A little extra depth to the rotation, let's see if the Mets counter this move with a move of their own.

Is he fat? Yes. Did the Phillies overpay? Yes. He may be struggling this season, but I'm not going to sit here and tell you that this doesn't phase me. It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Joe Blanton and that I wanted the Mets to acquire him the past two seasons. Of course the price made me balk, but nonetheless I feel that Blanton is a quality starting pitcher, and the Phillies needed starting pitching. They had Cole Hamels and 4 AAA quality arms. This gives them a pretty good 1-2 punch, and if Myers can ever get his head on straight a decent 1-2-3.
